San Diego County election office evacuated after bomb threat report ahead of Election Day

A suspicious suitcase discovered inside the San Diego County Registrar of Voters building led to an evacuation and road closures Monday afternoon, just hours before voters are set to head to the polls for Election Day.

The San Diego Police Department said officers were called to the facility at approximately 1:45 p.m. after the suitcase was found in the building’s front lobby. The discovery triggered a precautionary evacuation while authorities investigated a possible bomb threat.

Police also closed nearby streets as emergency personnel responded to the scene in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego.

The incident occurred one day before Election Day, when election officials are preparing for voting operations across the county. The Registrar of Voters building handles election administration, including ballot processing and other voting-related services.

The suitcase’s contents have not been disclosed, and it remains unclear who left it in the lobby or whether the incident was intended to disrupt election operations.
