Six people, including 2 children, were injured Thursday afternoon after a car drove onto a sidewalk and struck pedestrians during a Halloween event in Brooklyn, New York.
The crash happened around 4 p.m. near the intersection of Knickerbocker Avenue and Bleecker Street in the Bushwick neighborhood, where families had gathered for a trunk-or-treat event organized by the NYPD’s 83rd Precinct. The event had been promoted on social media and was attended by families celebrating Halloween.
A black sedan accelerated onto the sidewalk, striking pedestrians and a parked ambulance. Police said a 56-year-old man was driving the vehicle, while a 46-year-old woman was sitting in the passenger seat.
The victims included a 6-year-old, an 11-year-old, a 31-year-old, a 53-year-old, a 74-year-old and an 80-year-old. All 6 were taken to hospitals and listed in stable condition, according to WNYW.
One witness told WABC she narrowly avoided being struck after stepping out of a cab with her baby moments before the crash. She said the vehicle hit the area just seconds after she reached the sidewalk.
Both the driver and passenger were taken into custody, according to sources close to WNYW. The driver is being investigated on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Authorities said there was no indication the driver intentionally targeted police officers or pedestrians.
