Dallas police released body camera footage Friday showing an officer-involved shooting that left a 41-year-old man dead outside a motel in the Oak Cliff area earlier this week.
The shooting happened around 12:21 p.m. Wednesday at the Mustang Inn along the South R.L. Thornton Freeway, according to the Dallas Police Department. The man was identified as Rual Casas, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants involving narcotics and a probation violation.
Police said officers located Casas using Flock license plate-reading technology and found his vehicle at the motel. Officers saw him briefly step outside a room before returning inside.
An officer then ordered Casas to come outside, according to the department. Police said Casas exited while pointing a rifle at an officer. He was ordered to drop the weapon but instead pointed it toward another officer.
An officer then fired 2 rounds, striking Casas once, police said. Casas fell and dropped a handgun, but then picked it up and shot himself, according to the department.
Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Casas was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
The body camera footage was released as police provided additional details about the encounter. The department has not publicly disclosed further information about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
