The Pentagon says the execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed when he faces a firing squad at Fort Hood, Texas, in December.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the public will be able to watch Hasan’s execution, saying authorities will make sure it is “public” so people understand the consequences of his actions. The Pentagon later confirmed that the execution will be livestreamed, although officials have not said where the broadcast will be available.
Hasan is scheduled to be executed at 1 p.m. CST on Dec. 3 after President Donald Trump approved the death sentence and Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle set the execution date. The Army announced the date on Oct. 7.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist and major, was sentenced to death after being convicted in 2013 of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder for the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood.
The attack began at the base’s Soldier Readiness Processing Center, where service members were preparing for overseas deployments. Hasan opened fire, killing 13 people and injuring 32 others.
The planned execution would mark the first U.S. military execution since 1961, when Army Pvt. John Bennett was executed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It would also be the first U.S. military execution by firing squad since World War II.
The method has also drawn attention because firing squads are rarely used in the United States. The Army has not publicly released detailed procedures for how Hasan’s execution will be carried out or how members of the public will be able to watch it.
Hegseth said the execution would involve soldiers using rifles, but he did not provide details about the viewing arrangements. The Pentagon has since confirmed the livestream, but has not identified the platform that will host it.
Hasan’s conviction and death sentence went through the military appeals process, and the U.S. Supreme Court denied his request to review his court-martial conviction in 2025.
