A pilot was killed Wednesday morning when a small plane crashed near Hicks Airfield in Fort Worth, Texas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Lancair IV-P went down around 9:50 a.m. local time near West Bonds Ranch Road and Thatcher Road, southeast of the airfield. The FAA said the pilot was the only person on board.
Fort Worth firefighters said the pilot, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash also started a small grass fire, which crews quickly extinguished.
The aircraft crashed just off the roadway, with power lines reported down near the site. Authorities closed part of Bonds Ranch Road while emergency crews worked in the area. The closure extended from Willow Springs Road to Business 287, according to Fort Worth police.
The FAA said the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash. The agency said the information remains preliminary and could change as investigators gather more evidence.
Authorities have not said where the aircraft was headed or what caused it to crash.
The aircraft was a single-engine Lancair IV-P fixed-wing plane built in 2000, registered to Plane Metrics LLC of Fort Worth and received its certificate of airworthiness in May 2018, according to CBS News.
The FAA said the NTSB will provide further updates as the investigation continues.
