A Kentucky State Police trooper was killed Monday after an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 65 in Warren County, Kentucky, as police continue searching for a suspect who remains at large.
The trooper was identified as Hayden Phillips, according to a KSP update. Phillips was assigned to KSP Post 3 in Bowling Green and was a graduate of Cadet Class 103.
The incident happened on northbound I-65 near mile marker 38. KSP previously said the incident involved a trooper but did not initially release details about what led to the shooting.
Authorities are searching for a bluish-gray Honda Civic with an Alabama temporary tag, TN018596. The vehicle was last seen near I-65 North at the 75-mile marker, according to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the suspect may be a Black man with dreadlocks pulled into a bun on top of his head. He is considered armed and dangerous, and the public is urged not to approach the suspect or the vehicle.
KSP issued a Blue Alert following the incident and asked anyone who sees the vehicle to contact law enforcement.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet previously set up a detour at Exit 30 while authorities investigated the scene.
KSP Colonel Phillip Burnett Jr. said Phillips made the ultimate sacrifice while patrolling I-65 and praised his dedication to the agency and the commonwealth.
“Our hearts break for Trooper Phillips’ family, loved ones, and fellow troopers as we grieve this tremendous loss,” Burnett said.
