A dead body was found inside a burned vehicle at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida early Wednesday morning, officials said.
Security Forces airmen discovered the vehicle during a routine patrol at about 4:30 a.m. near Range Road 234 and Lewis Turner Boulevard, according to a statement.
The identity of the deceased person has not been released. Officials have also not said whether the person was a military member, civilian employee or otherwise connected to the base.
The Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death. Officials have not released details about what caused the vehicle to catch fire or the person’s cause of death.
In May, two people were injured in a separate incident at Eglin Air Force Base. The incident occurred at the High Explosive Research and Development Facility, where both people were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Eglin Air Force Base is located near Fort Walton Beach in Florida’s Panhandle and covers more than 460,000 acres. The base is home to thousands of military personnel and civilian employees, along with units from the Air Force, Space Force and Army.
The investigation remains ongoing.
