Former Mexican TV host Inés Gómez Mont arrested in Miami, Florida

Former Mexican television host Inés Gómez Mont has been arrested in Miami, Florida, after being wanted in Mexico on allegations of aggravated tax fraud and money laundering, Mexican authorities announced Friday.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) confirmed her arrest, saying it resulted from an exchange of information with the U.S. government. The agency said Gómez Mont, identified in its statement as Inés “N,” had an active arrest warrant in Mexico for her alleged involvement in aggravated tax fraud.

Gómez Mont faces 2 arrest warrants in Mexico involving separate financial crime allegations. In September 2021, the FGR obtained a court order accusing her of allegedly using shell companies to launder money connected to government contracts awarded to businesses linked to her husband, businessman Víctor Álvarez Puga.

According to Mexican authorities, the contracts were awarded without a public bidding process to companies connected to Álvarez Puga during the administration of former President Enrique Peña Nieto. Prosecutors allege the companies were used to issue false invoices and disguise financial transactions.

A second arrest warrant, also issued in 2021, concerns alleged tax fraud involving approximately 6.6 million pesos. Authorities accused Gómez Mont of failing to pay income tax for the 2015 fiscal year. In July 2024, she sought legal protection against the warrant, but a federal judge denied her request. She subsequently appealed the decision.

The arrest follows renewed efforts by the Mexican government to have Interpol reactivate red notices for Gómez Mont and Álvarez Puga. On Oct. 8, President Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration had asked authorities to restore the notices after learning they had been withdrawn.

Sheinbaum said the government was reviewing the alleged financial irregularities and the reasons Interpol had removed the notices. A red notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition or similar legal action.

Gómez Mont is a former television presenter and actress who became widely known in Mexico through her work in entertainment and television. Mexican authorities have not yet announced when she could be returned to Mexico to face the charges.
