2 helicopters collide mid-air near McMinnville airport in Oregon

Two helicopters collided mid-air near McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon on Thursday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The aircraft involved were a Robinson R22 and an Airbus H125. The collision happened around 2:15 p.m. local time on Thursday. The R22 had only its pilot on board, while 2 people were aboard the H125, the FAA said.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, with the NTSB taking charge of the investigation. Further updates are expected as investigators gather more information.

Oregon Route 233 was closed in both directions about 1 mile west of Dayton following the crash, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. Officials warned that the closure could last several hours and advised drivers to use alternate routes.

McMinnville Municipal Airport serves the city of McMinnville and surrounding areas in Yamhill County. It remains unclear whether the aircraft were taking off, landing or flying near the airport when the crash occurred.

The FAA has not released information about injuries or the condition of those aboard either helicopter. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
