Nancy Pelosi’s office receives suspicious letter, similar mailings reported nationwide

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco district office received a suspicious letter Wednesday that appeared similar to mailings reported by congressional offices across the country.

Pelosi spokesperson Nicholas Martin said in a statement issued around 2 p.m. Wednesday in San Francisco that everyone was safe and the office was following established security procedures.

Pelosi said she was concerned about other members of Congress and their staff who had received similar mailings. She also thanked the U.S. Capitol Police, the San Francisco Police Department and other law enforcement agencies for investigating the incidents.

The letter follows reports of suspicious mail sent to congressional offices and election officials in several states. Some of the earlier incidents involved envelopes containing unknown substances, prompting evacuations and responses from local police and emergency crews.

Rep. Maxwell Frost’s office in Orlando, Florida, was evacuated Friday after receiving a suspicious package. The office of fellow Florida Democrat Rep. Darren Soto also received an envelope containing a suspicious substance.

In South Dakota, Sen. Mike Rounds reported suspicious mail at his Sioux Falls office, prompting an evacuation. In California, Rep. Jimmy Panetta’s office in Santa Cruz received an envelope containing a suspicious white powder that was opened by a staff member.

Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry’s office also received a letter containing white powder earlier in the week. An employee who opened it was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but authorities later determined the substance was not harmful.

The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating the mailings. The U.S. Capitol Police has also warned congressional offices about the incidents.

Pelosi’s office has not released further details about Wednesday’s letter, including whether it contained a substance or led to an evacuation.
