A man was shot on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge on Tuesday night and taken to a New Jersey hospital.
The shooting was reported on the westbound side of the bridge, closer to the New Jersey end. The victim was transported to Englewood Hospital, but authorities have not released further details about his condition or what led to the shooting, ABC7 reported.
Police activity led to temporary closures of all New York-bound lanes on the bridge’s upper level as officers responded to the incident. Traffic alerts initially reported a blocked lane before the closure was expanded to all lanes heading toward New York City.
Drivers traveling toward Manhattan were directed to use the lower level, according to alerts from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The incident also caused delays in both directions. Notify NYC reported westbound traffic delays in Manhattan and advised drivers to consider alternate routes. NJ Transit bus service traveling to and from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station also experienced delays of up to 15 minutes.
The George Washington Bridge connects Fort Lee, New Jersey, with the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan across the Hudson River.
Authorities have not released additional information about the shooting.
