1 dead in shooting near mosque in northeast Columbus

One person was killed in a shooting near a mosque in northeast Columbus, Ohio, on Monday afternoon, but police said the incident was not an attack on the mosque and was not religiously targeted.

Police said they received a call about shots fired in the area shortly after 2:30 p.m. The shooting involved multiple people at an apartment complex who were involved in an unknown dispute, according to CPD.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said its Columbus Field Division special agents were responding to the incident.

“ATF Columbus Field Division Special Agents are responding to a reported shooting incident at a mosque in the 2200 block of Albert Ave. in Columbus, OH,” the agency said in a post on X.

A separate event was taking place at the nearby mosque at the time, but police said it was unrelated to the shooting.

One person died from a gunshot wound following an exchange of gunfire, police said. Officials did not confirm whether anyone else was injured.

The Columbus Division of Police is continuing to investigate the shooting. Police did not provide further details about a suspect, saying the investigation remains active.
