2 former SFPD officers and daughter identified after suspected murder-suicide

Two retired San Francisco Police Department officers and their 24-year-old daughter have been identified as the 3 people found dead in a suspected murder-suicide at a home in Marin County, California, authorities said.

Marin County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of gunfire at a home on Strawberry Circle shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement. A caller who was inside the residence was able to leave before deputies arrived.

The victims were identified as former San Francisco Police Department Sgt. Kevin Mannix, 68, his wife, retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and their daughter, Katherine Mannix, 24, according to San Francisco Police Officers Association.

Deputies secured the area before entering the home, where they found 3 people dead. Investigators believe Kevin Mannix fatally shot his wife and daughter before turning the gun on himself, according to SFG.

Authorities have described the incident as a suspected murder-suicide. The investigation remains ongoing, but officials said there is no threat to the public.

San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew expressed grief over the deaths in a statement Monday, saying Ann Mannix had served the department for more than 30 years and risen to the rank of deputy chief.

She worked at several San Francisco police stations and in the department’s Special Operations and Field Operations bureaus. She was also the first woman to lead the department’s tactical company, Lew said.

“My heart goes out to all their family members, friends and colleagues at the SFPD as we all work to process this tragedy,” Lew said.

The San Francisco Police Officers Association also expressed shock over the deaths, saying the tragedy had “left our entire SFPD family reeling.”

“Ann Mannix was a trailblazer in our department,” the association said in a statement from president Louis Wong, noting that she became the first woman to join and lead the department’s SWAT team before going on to lead its Field Operations and Special Operations bureaus.

Marin County Sheriff Jamie Scardina’s office continues to investigate the deaths. Authorities have not released further details about what led to the shooting.
