A 16-year-old Norview High School student was killed and another 16-year-old student was injured after a shooting in the school parking lot during dismissal Wednesday afternoon in Norfolk, Virginia, according school officials.
The shooting was reported at about 2:25 p.m. in the 6800 block of Sewells Point Road, where officers found 2 males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a local hospital.
Police said one student was shot in the upper body while the other was wounded in the lower body. One of the students later died from his injuries.
Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot said the students were in the parking lot following dismissal when they were approached by another group of juveniles. A dispute followed, and a juvenile suspect pulled out a gun and shot both students, according to police.
Authorities said they know who the suspect is and are actively searching for them. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose confirmed the death of a Norview High School student and said the shooting involved 3 Norview High School students.
Dismissal at Norview Middle School was delayed as police investigated the shooting. School officials said security personnel kept students at the middle school inside and secure during the response.
The Education Association of Norfolk expressed condolences to the victim’s family and said the school community was grieving following the shooting.
Norfolk police have not released additional details about the investigation. The motive for the shooting also remains unclear.
