Two men were killed and another was critically injured Wednesday after a coworker opened fire inside United Rentals in Manassas, Virginia. The suspect was later found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead.
Manassas City Police responded to the United Rentals facility at 9415 Wellington Road at 7:14 a.m., where officers found 3 employees with gunshot wounds. The shooting happened in a garage area of the business, where at least eight employees were working at the time.
The victims were rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Police identified the men who later died as 48-year-old Richard Lamot and 33-year-old Christopher Serrano. The third victim survived and remains hospitalized in stable condition but will need surgery.
Police identified the suspected shooter as 37-year-old Marvin Grant, who was a coworker of the victims. Police Chief Douglas Keen said Grant arrived at work Wednesday morning and told a coworker that three people were going to die.
Keen said an altercation then occurred before Grant pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot the three victims.
Grant fled the business after the shooting, leading to a statewide manhunt. Police told people to avoid the area and stay indoors while officers searched for him. Access to Wellington Road and the Route 28 Bypass was blocked during the response.
Nearby schools were placed on lockdown during the search. The lockdowns were later lifted, while students at Jennie Dean Elementary School were redirected to Metz Middle School.
Police later tracked Grant using technology, and a Virginia State Police trooper spotted his vehicle on southbound Interstate 81 in Augusta County. Troopers attempted to stop him after his vehicle pulled into a rest area near the 232-mile marker, but Grant drove away.
Grant eventually pulled over near the 227-mile marker. State police said troopers saw that he had a gun and brought in a negotiator. The standoff lasted about an hour before Grant shot himself.
Grant was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Virginia State Police said no troopers fired their weapons.
Police have not identified a clear motive for the shooting and are continuing to investigate what led to the attack.
