Two people were found dead and at least 40 others were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Monday after a makeshift boat capsized about 10 miles off Mona Island, Puerto Rico, following a fight on board involving a machete.
The 2 people who died have not yet been identified, and their nationalities or places of origin have not been released.
The Coast Guard said rescue efforts remain ongoing after survivors reported that about 60 people had been aboard the vessel.
The vessel reportedly capsized around 11 p.m. Sunday after a fight broke out onboard and several people were severely injured with a machete. People then jumped into the water and attempted to swim toward Mona Island.
No one aboard was wearing a life jacket, according to the Coast Guard.
Multiple agencies are involved in the search, including Coast Guard Sector San Juan, the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Doyle, Air Station Borinquen, Air Station Miami, Puerto Rico Police, Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations, the Dominican Republic Air Force and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources Ranger Corps.
