A man has been charged after a pediatric critical care doctor was killed and his wife was critically injured in a stabbing at their home in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, early Thursday morning.
Allegheny County police said 911 received a report of a stabbing at 12:31 a.m. in the 100 block of Linden Avenue. First responders found an adult man and woman suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The man was identified as 46-year-old Dr. Idris Evans. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife was also taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition.
Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway and said he entered the home and attacked the couple while they were sleeping.
Hemingway was later found behind a nearby home by a K9 unit from the Monroeville Police Department. He had lacerations to his hand and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He faces charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.
The couple’s two children were home at the time of the attack but were not injured and were able to leave the house, police said. The scene was described as very violent, with broken bedroom furniture and mirrors.
Police said it is unclear whether Hemingway knew the victims. Evans’ wife told detectives she did not know him.
Evans was a pediatric critical care doctor at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
The investigation remains ongoing.
