Two separate armed attacks in Mexico have left at least 17 people dead and two others injured, according to authorities. Among the victims were two firefighters and a paramedic.
One of the attacks occurred Saturday night in Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato, when a group of armed men opened fire on patrons at local food stands. The attack, which took place around 9:30 p.m., claimed the lives of eight people, including a paramedic and two firefighters, and left two others injured. Witnesses reported that a white luxury vehicle arrived at the scene, and armed men exited before opening fire on the crowd.
The second incident took place in Jiutepec, Morelos, south of Mexico City, where assailants targeted individuals inside a warehouse reportedly used for storing illegal drugs. According to reports from El Universal, nine people were killed, with forensic sources confirming that the victims suffered close-range gunshot wounds.
Authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the attacks, and the motives remain unknown.
These incidents add to a series of violent events that have marred the early months of Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency. Recent massacres include an attack at a bar in Querétaro that left 10 dead and 10 injured, followed by another attack at a bar in Tabasco, resulting in six deaths and 10 injuries.
Meanwhile, ongoing cartel violence has escalated in Sinaloa, particularly near Culiacán, where rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel have clashed violently. The power struggle intensified following the suspicious arrest of cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada near El Paso, Texas, alongside the son of notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
