Judge denies bail for Sean “Diddy” Combs in sex trafficking trial

A judge has denied bail to Sean “Diddy” Combs, following prosecutors’ arguments that his release would endanger public safety. The decision, issued Wednesday afternoon, cited significant risks of witness tampering and direct evidence of Combs’ violent behavior.

On November 8, 2024, Combs filed a motion for release. However, after a hearing on November 22 and further filings on November 25 and 26, the court ruled that no conditions could ensure the safety of the community. Judge Arun Subramanian’s decision was based on a thorough review of the evidence, including allegations of violent conduct, the severity of the charges, and concerns about witness interference.

The indictment accused Combs of abusing, threatening, and coercing women and others over decades to fulfill his desires, protect his reputation, and cover up misconduct. It described a criminal enterprise within Combs’ business empire, with members involved in crimes such as sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.

The document also alleged that Combs personally used firearms to intimidate victims and witnesses, noting the recovery of weapons, including three AR-15 rifles with defaced serial numbers, from his residences earlier this year.

Judge Subramanian referenced video evidence and text messages from a widely publicized 2016 incident as direct proof of Combs’ violent actions. Prosecutors argued that this evidence contradicted Combs’ claim that his behavior stemmed from a toxic relationship.

Prosecutors pointed to efforts by Combs to influence the jury pool and potentially reach witnesses indirectly. They also highlighted an incident involving legal pads retrieved from Combs’ detention facility, which, despite being marked as privileged, raised questions about his credibility and willingness to follow court rules.

Ultimately, the judge determined that prosecutors had presented clear and convincing evidence that Combs’ release would pose a danger to public safety. The decision reflected the gravity of the charges, Combs’ history, and the risk of further obstruction or harm. Consequently, Combs will remain in custody while awaiting trial.

Currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, Sean “Diddy” Combs is scheduled to stand trial on May 5, 2025.
