A plane crash near Costa Rica’s capital has resulted in the deaths of five people and one woman critically injured, according to officials. The aircraft, an Aero Caribe Air Charter plane, went down in a mountainous area, which made rescue efforts challenging.
The plane was last seen on radar around 12:30 p.m., and shortly after it was reported missing, rescue operations began in the Cerro Piedra Blanca area near San Jose, according to the Costa Rican Red Cross.
Around 60 Costa Rican rescue workers participated in the search, but difficult terrain and bad weather delayed their efforts. Rescuers reached the crash site at 8:35 p.m., where they found the victims either trapped in the wreckage or nearby.
A 31-year-old woman was found alive but in critical condition with multiple injuries, the Red Cross informed. Although initial reports indicated two survivors, officials later clarified that only one person remained alive. It remains unclear whether the second individual passed away before help arrived.
The victims, including the pilot, co-pilot, and four passengers, have all been identified, including the sole survivor, according to La Nación. Recovery efforts for the deceased are still underway.
