The economic daily newspaper Handelsblatt has reported that Germany is gearing up for early Bundestag elections on February 23, 2025. According to the publication, sources within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have confirmed the proposed date, while the leadership of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) is also backing this election schedule.
This evening, November 12, 2024, the CDU’s executive board will gather for an emergency meeting to discuss their strategy moving forward. The gathering comes after the collapse of the ruling coalition, which has thrown German politics into turmoil.
Chancellor Scholz has committed to holding a vote of confidence on January 15, 2025. If his government fails to secure enough support, it will clear the path for early parliamentary elections. While Scholz’s initial timeline pointed to elections at the end of March, opposition parties—the CDU/CSU bloc and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), the latter having recently exited the coalition—are pushing for an earlier date.
