A 50-year-old Polish man has drowned while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean near Pedrogao Beach, Portuguese police reported. The man’s disappearance was first reported by his wife.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon, according to authorities. The man’s wife sought help from a local resident when she realized he was missing, and emergency services were called about half an hour after he had entered the water.

Pedro Cervaens Costa, the port commander in Figueira da Foz, stated that two maritime rescue units were dispatched immediately following the alert. Meanwhile, local firefighter and police teams began searching for the man from the shore.

Despite an extensive search lasting over an hour, the 50-year-old’s body was eventually found by the waves, washing ashore near Pedrogao Beach. Lifeguards present on the beach attempted resuscitation, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead shortly after, Costa confirmed.
